I'm trying to think of the best way to explain this in text. Basically you'll benefit from being as exact about it as possible. Like, example - if I'm writing about a band, then the fandom would be that band. Another example is how Thai BL fandoms ship the actors outside of the work itself, and tag it as something like (Show) RPF or (shipname) RPF.
