It's the last month of the year, and Spotify is telling me they have my Spotify Wrapped ready, so why not make a post about that? (Music counts as a fandom, right?)

So, without further ado...

Next-to-last round of the questionnaire.

Creative Fan Endeavors

  • Have you ever created fan art, fan fiction, or any other fan work for your fandom?
Wrote one fic so far, did an attempt at fanart as a kid, have a few song parodies/filk up, did one vid.

  • Can you talk about a fan project that you’re particularly proud of?
    No.

  • How do you see creativity as a part of your participation in the fandom?
I... don't know, honestly. I've done so few fanworks...

  • What’s your process like when creating something inspired by your fandom?
Can't say as I have one, it's been so long since I've made anything...

  • Are there any tips or advice you’d offer to someone wanting to start creating fan content?
I have to take my own advice, but it would be to just do it. Write, draw, edit.

  • Do you collaborate with other fans on projects or creations? If so, what is that like?
    I've never done that.

  • How has the feedback from the community affected your creative works?
I haven't gotten that much feedback...

  • What motivates you to contribute your own creations to the fan community?
I just want to be acknowledged as having worthwhile ideas. Probably not healthy...

  • Have any of your fan creations ever been recognized by the creators or actors involved in the fandom?
    No.

  • Is there a creative skill you’ve developed or improved on through your fan activities?
    Can't say that there is.

  • How do you balance originality and adherence to the source material in your creations?
I don't know, I haven't written enough for that to come up!

  • What’s been the most ambitious or large-scale fan project you’ve seen or participated in?
    I don't know...

    andersenmom: yummy.... (dragons)
    [personal profile] andersenmom
    Weekly Score: 76.4% (97/127)

Goal 1: Do Physical Therapy Exercises. 83% (80/96)

Review: I sort of failed at the end of the week. Everything hurts again, so it feels like nothing is helping. Which stinks.

Goal 2: Take Care of Myself. 46% (11/24)

Review: I did not do well, not even on the one I usually do well on! I didn't get to bed by 11 any night, and didn't manage set meals for at least two days this week. I did manage two walks (and picked up a book of poetry on one of those), and did some work on various projects. With no actual scientific data behind it, I think the staying up late was a way to have some time to myself, with my children home this week. if so, I need a better coping mechanism for the summer - and over winter break.

    Goal 3: Finish GYWO Build-a-Bingo and 100Ships. 86% (6/7)

Review: I didn't write as much as I'd hoped, and I have to get on the ball because the Build a Bingo ends on 8 December. I did finally get my third board, and have already submitted one bingo on that one.

Intentions for the future: G1: Restart on the physical therapy, and just do it. G2: Try to get out more, walks and get to bed on time. Meals are okay, and I have a lot of things to collect. G3: I need to get writing. I have around 9 fics to write to finish off my third board, and the challenge ends 8 Dec.

My lack of reading in Oct frustrated me so I may have overcompensated this month… I’m still halfway through a few books, but I’ve had this written up for a while, so just gonna post it!

It also occurred to me that the majority of my media consumption this month is trans-related. Until I get it out of my system, please have my gender fucky media recs wahaha.

    Games

    • it sucks to be us by tofurocks: Interactive fiction about a closeted transmasc enby and a trans guy who was forced to detransition meeting at a sapphic event. It’s a short, thoughtful game even if it took me half a dozen replays to get to a positive ending… is this why I’m a single pringle irl? t_t I’m too cowardly to rack up enough courage points to befriend queer people even in fictional games? Help
    • Gang Beasts by indie studio Boneloaf: This was SO fun, a 10/10 battle royale party game. Someone I know bought it on Steam and we punched / kicked / picked up and threw each other around by pressing playstation controller buttons. Pressing random buttons guarantees you at least one win in a series of battles. Watch the videos in the link, it’s super cute.

    Short stories

    • Everquest by Naomi Kanakia: Set in India, a transfem person plays video games. Sad and hopeful. <3
    • Slavebreaker by rezingrave: Gothic erotic horror and space opera fiction set in a TERF lesbian empire, featuring unreliable narrators, brainwashing, parasites, genocide and rebels. This was insane and I loved it. Reviewers on AO3 and itch.io called it "tboy yaoi psychosis" and a pulp pastiche. Nsfw. <3
    • The Shape of My Name by Nino Cipri: Time travel story about forgiving family, transitioning to find yourself, and Illinois' oil fields... it made me cry. <3
    • To Balance the Weight of Khalem by R.B. Lemberg: Achy soft fantasy story about immigration driven by war, as well as about the comfort of food, the desire to be seen, and the search for a home. By a bigender author from Ukraine, who has novels! <3
    • Small Changes Over Long Periods of Time by KM Szpara: Trans guy gets bitten by a gay vampire. Fun and campy. Nsfw!
    • Of Warps and Wefts by Innocent Chizaram Ilo: After marriage, a person lives as a husband by day and as a wife by night, or vice versa. By a Nigerian author. This had a lot of characters, but the story stayed with me.
    • Chokechain by Andrew Joseph White: Teen trans boy finds out his parents bought a robot who looks like his pre-transition self. Entertaining if a bit edgy.
    • I sexually identify as an attack helicopter by Isabel Fall: A pilot transitions from the gender of "woman" into the gender of "attack helicopter" to get better at fighting wars for their AI government. The military references flew (hehe flew) over my head, but in the end I found this a thoughtful subversion of the derogatory "haha if you identify as x gender can I identify as an attack helicopter?" meme.

    Comics/manga

    • Becoming by ND Stevenson: Quiet comic about the author discovering he's bigender and transmasc. <3
    • Haikei, Seken-sama | Dear Society by Kanzaki Shin: About the protag realizing he's ftm while growing up. Apparently it's based on the mangaka's real life, and if so it sounds like it was traumatizing. Actually one of my worst nightmares sketched out in manga form. T_T Good read even if the ending didn't resonate with me... but if that's how it went down irl for the author, good for him, aha! <3

    Books

    • We Both Laughed in Pleasure: The Selected Diaries of Lou Sullivan, 1961–1991 <3
    • Some Strange Music Draws Me In by Griffin Hansbury <3
    • Crawl: Stories by Max Delsohn
    • The Lilac People by Milo Todd
    • You Weren't Meant to Be Human by Andrew Joseph White
    • Captive Prince by CS Pacat

Initially I started writing about each book, but they became wordy, so I'll put them in a different post. :D

    Round 3 of the questionnaire!

    Experiences and Memories

    1. What’s the most memorable experience you’ve had related to your fandom(s)?
      I can't think of one.

    2. Have you ever traveled to a location specifically because it was featured or related to your fandom(s)?
      No.

    3. Can you share about a time when fandom helped you through a difficult period?
      No.

    4. What’s the longest you’ve ever waited in line for an event or release related to fandom?
      Just until midnight.

    5. Have you had the chance to meet any of the actors, musicians, authors, or creators from your fandom(s)?
      No.

    6. What’s the most treasured piece of merchandise you have that’s related to fandom?
      I can't think of any.

    7. Do you remember the first item you ever collected or received related to fandom?
Do books from the series count? If not, it was getting a Spyro the Dragon plushie at the school carnival as a kid.

    8. What’s the most exciting fan event or panel you’ve attended?
I haven't attended any that were explicitly fannish.

    9. Have you participated in any challenges, collaborations, or competitions within fandom?
Closest thing I can think of are the Snowflake and Sunshine Challenges on Dreamwidth.

    10. How did you feel the first time you saw your favorite character, band, or actor in person?
I have never seen my favorites in person.

    11. Have any of your family or friends become fans because of your influence? What was that like?
No, and I want to keep it that way. My parents have ruined one thing too many for me to want them to be fannish in the same ways that I am.

    12. What’s the most emotional moment you’ve had as a fan within your community?
Probably the time I felt like I wouldn't be allowed back into the Discord server, but I was allowed back.

It's USA Thanksgiving today, so I'll post 5 things about fandom that I'm grateful for.

    1. Providing a space where I don't feel as weird for liking the things I do

    2. Gifting me with wonderful works of creativity (even if that aspect is coming into question nowadays...)

    3. Giving me a space to gush about my favorite things

    4. Letting me attempt to exercise my creativity

    5. That happy moment when I've found a relatively chill fandom spot, an oasis

Review: I'm still doing pretty well on this. I'm really happy about it.

Goal 2: Take Care of Myself. 63% (15/24)

Review: I am still not getting to bed on time. I did get a couple of walks in, however, and I have been eating regularly. It's helpful. I can tell, now, when I'm not eating. I did some work on some things I wanted to get done, too, and that's been really good.

    Goal 3: Finish GYWO Build-a-Bingo and 100Ships. 44% (4/9)

Review: I'm not sure if I got another bingo board, but I'll keep working on the fics. It's still not working, this writing thing. I'm having a hard time with it. This week might be harder, because my children are home, but I'm going to keep trying.

Intentions for the future: G1: I'm going to keep doing physical therapy. Not much else for this. G2: I have to keep working on making things better, taking care of myself. It's hard. It's hard to make myself a priority. G3: I will be getting a new board soon, and then I'll work on filling that up as well.

For this post, I'm going to talk a bit about my feelings on book-to-screen adaptations. It's a bit of a pet peeve of mine, honestly- telling someone they've watched an adaptation only to have them say "It was a book?"

But enough of that- I would rather talk about how I'd like to to see more books get animated adaptations, as unlikely as that is for most of the things I wouldn't have minded as much. (I swear, the "Animation is for the immature" stigma needs to die.)

On the Tamora Pierce fan forum I used to frequent, one suggestion on how The Circle of Magic/Emelan universe books could be adapted to animation would be in the style of Avatar: The Last Airbender or Studio Ghibli. I personally think that's a wonderful idea- Emelan has more slice-of-life aspects to it than Tortall, so it might not have been as expensive to produce.

Another series I would have loved to see get an animated adaptation (instead of the mess of a live-action movie we DID get) is Artemis Fowl. We see Artemis grow up a bit during the series, and I feel that animating and hiring voice actors would have made things easier had the adaptations been successful enough to continue. (and we wouldn't have gotten that STUPID concept of a giant dwarf! AND they could have still cast Josh Gad!) Besides, some aspects would have been CGI'd to heck and back, so why not do it all in the same medium so it would look better?

However, my stance on this does not hold firm on all book adaptations. Take the adaptation of Uglies. You could argue that doing the film with animation would lend itself better to an uncanny valley beauty effect for the characters post-surgery. But. Later books in the series depict self-harm, and not in an entirely negative manner. I simply cannot condone that. (I'm glad the film adaptation flopped.)

I also love seeing fan creativity when it comes to making vids out of books that never got a screen adaptation, from animatics to found footage vids. Oh well. Guess I'll sit here with my pipe dreams...

    Fandom Participation

    1. Do you keep up with any official or fan-authored wikis or encyclopedias about your fandoms?
      No, I don't.

    2. How do you stay updated with the latest news and information concerning your fandoms?
I don't stay updated with most of my fandoms, the ones I do manage to stay relatively up to date with come from Discord servers.

    3. Are there any forums, social media groups, or online communities you frequent to discuss your fandom?
I'm currently in Discord servers for a couple of mine, was involved in a couple of forums in the past for others.

    4. How would you describe the overall atmosphere and culture within the fan community?
That's kind of a tough question in regards to Megamind- the Megamind Discord server I'm in has a relatively positive attitude toward the television content that dropped in 2024, as compared to the other members of the fandom that absolutely hated it. The Tamora Pierce forum I frequented before it died was pretty chill, especially in regards to shipping.

    5. Have you attended any fan conventions or meet-ups? If so, what was your experience like?
I've attended a few local ones! It was a bit overwhelming- I don't do so well in crowds without a distraction like my MP3 player. It was still fun though!

    6. What’s the significance of fan art, fan fiction, or fan videos in your community?
We love our creators. Not too many vidders hanging around in my fan spaces, but I want to make fic and vids myself.

    7. Are there any charity or social causes your fandom community supports?
      None than I know of.

    8. How do fan theories or headcanons contribute to your enjoyment of the fandom?
They can sometimes annoy me, but I have a personal headcanon that serves to make my least favorite entry in the Artemis Fowl series more bearable.

    9. Are there any rituals or annual events that your fandom community participates in each year?
I'm not sure how much this counts, but the Megamind Discord server has a tradition of showing Christmas movies all through December.

    10. What is the craziest or most dedicated thing you’ve done for your fandom(s)?
Hmm. Maybe spending a bit too much money on the Megamind artbook.

    11. Have you created any content or resources that have contributed to the fan community?
      No, I haven't.

    12. Are there any well-known fan community leaders or content creators that you admire?
Not sure if they count for well-known, but there is one fic writer I do appreciate quite a bit for writing certain tropes without a lot of the baggage that leads me to dislike them, also for using the Dead Dove: Do Not Eat tag properly.

I need to collect more of these to form an urban dictionary. They tickle me so badly 😫
